I was given one stool softener yesterday, because narcotics can really slow things down. Last night I started passing gas, which really helped my tummy feel better. I refused the rest of the softeners they provided since I got off the narcotics, and also refused the heparin shot (I did get one yesterday morning) and Prilosec today. Had my first bowel movement a little bit ago and I feel much less bloated. Just waiting on the doc to do rounds they I will be discharged!
This is really a post for potential donors, as my family and friends don't really need to know about my natural body functions. :)

Woke up needing to pee, and was concerned it'd be painful to get up since it had been awhile since I had Tylenol. Surprisingly it wasn't bad, definitely stiff and sore but I expected worse. A lot of it is just muscle stiffness from being in my side the whole surgery. Took some Tylenol now going to try to get back to sleep! It's been a long, but good day of recovery. I started just Tylenol at 1pm, and it's been working well enough to keep me mostly comfortable. Spent the afternoon walking laps and napping. Coughing hurts like a bitch, and for a short time i had a really painful left shoulder, from the gas used in my abdomen during surgery. I ordered dinner but didn't have much of an appetite. I got a shower in, then walked up to see Teddy just a little bit ago. Photos of my kidney and his kidneys are posted on his mom's blog, link is in the right column.
Now time to get some sleep! I had a good, light lunch today and took a nap. Had a sweet frind visit with some treats and books, then got up for a few laps around the floor. Ran into the docs, who said I can be off the IV fluids now, although I will still have the IV lock in til I leave. They said as long as things keep going well, theyll put in discharge orders early tomorrow! I had eggs and gluten free toast for breakfast, so far so good! Got into my own clothes, brushed my teeth and washed my face, and walked a couple laps. I am on oral narcotics now but will try extra strength Tylenol next. I am swollen, retaining a lot of water. My hands, feet, and face look so fat, but hopefully that'll decrease soon. I'm still on IV fluids but they've been decreased and will hopefully be stopped tonight. I went for another, longer, walk last night about 11pm. I was moving slow but more so from anticipation of pain, not actual pain. Slept pretty good last night, except my door here opens and closes really loudly so I woke up when the nurses came in.
I had bloodworm drawn this morning, and as long as those results come back good I can get rid of my second, "just in case" IV. They pulled the catheter about 6am, and the fellow that worked with my surgeon, Teddy's surgeon, and three residents came in a little bit ago. They did take pictures of my kidney in Teddy, so I will post those when I get them. I am on a regular diet now, but haven't ordered anything yet. They are going to get rid of my pain med button, decrease IV fluids, and start me on oral meds this morning. I got up and went on a short little walk at 6p, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Stiff and sore, but not in 'pain'. I've hit the pain medication (hydromorohone) button just twice since getting to my room, and hopefully I will be on oral pain meds tomorrow. Catheter comes out in the morning.
I think I remember moaning really loudly when I got into recovery, and I remember thinking that it felt like I had done a million crunches, and was holding a crunch. Very painful and crampy. That feeling subsided pretty quickly though and I've just felt sore since. Some alarm kept going off in recovery, and they'd tel me to take nice deep breaths, but I think the monitor was just off because they kept saying that it was acting up. But I was annoyed because all I wanted to do was sleep. I was wheeled to my room about 3pm. Either the guy pushing my bed was terrible or my bed was acting up, but I was afraid I was going to get sick from all the swerving and stoping and going. Speaking of feeling sick, I talked to the anesthesia doc before surgery about always getting sick to my stomach on narcotics, so he gave me an anti-nausea patch behind my ear and it is working really well. I've just been sleeping off and on and trying to update on here so that I share everything before I forget. Teddy seems to be doing really well, Lefty is doing a great job! I'm hoping to get real breakfast in the morning and be up moving around more Feeling good, but cranky. I'm hungry, on clear liquids but by the time that info got to room service they were swamped so I'm waiting for my 'food.'
Out and doing well! Surgery was finished around 1. I haven't heard anything about Teddy yet.
All gowned up, waiting for surgeon to come in to mark my left side, then anesthesiology will come in to get me set up and will take me to the OR at 7:15.
Nurse told me that it's scheduled to be a 6 hour surgery - probably because they are removing Teddy's kidneys first, usually they say 3-4 hours. |
